Profile Story Pitch: Behind the LGBTQ Label

For our final story profile, we have come up with two potential ideas:

We would like to profile a day in the life of a youth resident at El Rescate, an LGBTQ homeless shelter at Vida Sida in Humboldt Park. There are approximately 1.6 million to 2.8 million homeless young people in the United States (Center for American Progress 2010), with 20 to 40 percent of them identifying as LGBTQ. This Real Chi Youth photo essay will address the topic of healthy relationships.

Our second pitch is to do a more intimate portrait of Cory, one of our interviewees from the LGBTQ mental health story. We want to show his life as a non-binary trans teenager—both its normalcy and unique challenges. Roughly 9 in 10 LGBTQ youth are out amongst their friends while only 64 percent of those youth are out everyone, according to the Human Rights Campaign. This photo essay will also address the topic of healthy relationships.
