Chicago Youth Organize After Trayvon Verdict

When interviewed after George Zimmerman’s innocent verdict, Malcolm London acknowledged that racism still exist in a post racial world. Malcolm discussed classism and how minorities’ lives are devalued within our society. He elaborated on the fact that the issue is not just about Trayvon, but all the “Trayvons”, meaning other minorities, in our communities, who are victims of gun violence. As a youth activist, London led a protest in response to the controversial verdict.

Free Spirit Media reporters also attended an open mic session, known as Word Play, at Young Chicago Authors located on Division and Milwaukee. In the wake of the verdict, YCA has become a gathering space for youth activists and organizers.
